Now this one, this is where everything started lah — A Famosa, or as the Portuguese called it, Porta de Santiago. You're standing in front of one of the oldest European ruins in all of Southeast Asia, and honestly, it still gives me chills every time I walk past it. So picture this — it's 1511, and the Portuguese general Alfonso de Albuquerque has just conquered the mighty Malacca Sultanate. First thing he does? He orders a massive fortress built right here on this hillside. And when I say massive, I mean it covered the entire hill, with thick walls, watchtowers, barracks, churches, even a governor's residence. It was basically a city within a city, kan? For over a hundred years, this fortress was the Portuguese powerhouse in Asia. Ships from Lisbon to Macau would stop right here in Malacca, and A Famosa kept them safe. Then in 1641, the Dutch came knocking — literally. After a brutal siege that lasted months, the Portuguese finally fell, and the Dutch took over. They didn't tear the fort down though.
