This elegant white building with the golden onion domes on top — it's got a story that goes from colonial privilege to national pride lah. Welcome to the Proclamation of Independence Memorial, one of the most meaningful stops on our walk through Malacca. Before it became a memorial, this was the Malacca Club — the exclusive social hangout for British colonial elites. Think afternoon tea, cricket matches, billiard rooms, and strict dress codes. It was built in 1912, and for decades, it was the place where the British rulers of Malacca would gather to socialize, completely separate from the local population they governed. Imagine the irony, kan? A building that once symbolized colonial exclusion now celebrates the moment Malaysia broke free from colonial rule. On August 31, 1957, Tunku Abdul Rahman — the Father of Independence — stood on the Padang in front of this very building and proclaimed Merdeka! Freedom! He shouted it seven times, and the crowd roared it back. That single word, Merdeka, became the rallying cry of a new nation. If you close your eyes and stand here, you can almost hear the echoes.
