And this museum — the Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum — is the crown jewel of the entire street. So first, let me explain who the Baba Nyonya are, kan? When Chinese traders started settling in Malacca centuries ago — some as early as the 1400s — many married local Malay women. Their descendants developed a unique hybrid culture called Peranakan, or Straits Chinese. The men were called Baba, and the women Nyonya. They spoke a mix of Malay and Hokkien, wore clothes that blended Chinese and Malay styles, and created a cuisine that's now famous across Southeast Asia. This museum occupies three beautifully restored townhouses that have been the ancestral home of the Chan family since 1861 — that's four generations living under these roofs. Chan Kim Lay, the fourth-generation descendant, opened his family home as a museum in 1986 so the world could see how the Peranakan elite once lived. And lived well, they did.
