Now we're heading about three kilometres east of Dutch Square to somewhere truly unique — the Portuguese Settlement, or Medan Portugis. This isn't a museum or a monument. This is a living, breathing community where people still carry the blood and traditions of Portuguese colonists from over five hundred years ago lah. Let me paint the picture for you. In 1511, the Portuguese conquered Malacca. They stayed for 130 years before the Dutch kicked them out in 1641. But here's the thing — not all the Portuguese left. Many had married local Malay and Indian women, put down roots, and raised families. Where were they supposed to go, kan? So they stayed. Generation after generation, they kept their faith, their food, their music, and their language alive, even as the world changed around them. The settlement as you see it today was formally established in the 1920s when the British colonial government set aside this piece of seaside land for the Portuguese-Eurasian community. And in 1985, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad opened the Portuguese Square — Medan Portugis — modelled after a traditional Portuguese marketplace.
