You are standing before the oldest intact Hindu temple in all of Malaysia lah — the Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple, right here on the famous Harmony Street in Malacca. Built in 1781, this temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed Hindu deity of wisdom, success, and new beginnings. And there is something deeply appropriate about that, kan? Because the story of this temple is really the story of new beginnings for an entire community. The temple was built by the Chitty community — also known as the Indian Peranakans. These are descendants of Tamil traders who came to Malacca as far back as the fifteenth century during the height of the Malaccan Sultanate. Over generations, they married local Malay women and developed their own unique hybrid culture, blending Hindu religious practices with Malay customs, language, and dress. They are one of the most fascinating and least-known communities in Malaysia. Now look at the architecture — you will notice it does not look like a typical South Indian temple.
