Welcome to St. Peter's Church — the oldest functioning Roman Catholic church in all of Malaysia, and a place that carries the heartbeat of Malacca's Portuguese-Eurasian community. This church was built in 1710, and the story behind it is fascinating. See, when the Dutch conquered Malacca from the Portuguese in 1641, they banned Catholic worship. The Portuguese community was devastated — their faith was central to their identity, kan? But then something unexpected happened. During the War of the Spanish Succession in Europe, Holland and Portugal ended up fighting on the same side. As a gesture of goodwill, the Dutch relaxed their anti-Catholic laws in Malacca. A wealthy Dutch Catholic named Franz Amboer donated this land, and the Portuguese community finally had a place to worship again. The architecture is a beautiful blend of East and West. Look at the facade — you can see hints of Portuguese baroque mixed with local Malay and Chinese influences.
