The Portuguese community was devastated — their faith was central to their identity, kan? But then something unexpected happened. During the War of the Spanish Succession in Europe, Holland and Portugal ended up fighting on the same side. As a gesture of goodwill, the Dutch relaxed their anti-Catholic laws in Malacca. A wealthy Dutch Catholic named Franz Amboer donated this land, and the Portuguese community finally had a place to worship again. The architecture is a beautiful blend of East and West.
