If you want to understand just how wealthy and refined the Peranakan community of Malacca truly was, there is no better place than this — welcome to the Straits Chinese Jewellery Museum lah! Opened in 2012 and housed in a gorgeous heritage building on Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, this museum is a treasure chest of Peranakan craftsmanship. The collection includes some of the most exquisite jewellery you will ever see — intricate gold filigree work, diamond-studded brooches, jade pendants, and elaborate kerongsang pins that Nyonya women used to fasten their kebaya blouses. The Straits Chinese, or Peranakan, were the descendants of early Chinese traders who married local Malay women. Over centuries, they developed a unique culture that blended Chinese and Malay traditions into something entirely new. And nowhere is that fusion more visible than in their jewellery, kan? You will see pieces that combine Chinese motifs — dragons, phoenixes, peonies — with Malay goldsmithing techniques and European gemstone settings. Each piece tells a story of cultural exchange. The kerongsang is perhaps the most iconic piece of Peranakan jewellery. These elaborate brooches were worn in sets of three to hold the kebaya closed at the chest. The finest examples here...
